RIT Community Develops Immersive Virtual Reality Game

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) community has come together to create a new virtual reality game, Changeling VR, which is now available on Steam Early Access. This community-built game is the result of a five-year collaboration between students and faculty from RIT’s Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences and the College of Art and Design [1]. For many students, working on the game counted as a key co-op credit for their degree program, providing them with hands-on experience in agile development, level design, narrative, and sound composition.

The game, Changeling VR, allows players to take on the role of a detective who can see people’s thoughts and memories. Using these mystical powers and skills of deduction, players must work with a family to discover what is wrong with their baby. Each member of the family has their own unique level, making it like five VR games in one.

For example, the mother’s level is ethereal, like floating through space, while the brother’s level is designed in the style of his sketchbook, where players slingshot through the environment [1].
